Minimum spend
The minimum spend constraint sets a floor on the transaction amount required to apply a promotion. If the transaction amount is below the configured threshold, the promotion is not available for that transaction.
How it works
The threshold is compared against the total transaction amount at the moment the participant presents the QR code. If the amount is equal to or above the minimum, the promotion appears in the list and can be selected. If the amount is below the minimum, the promotion is not shown.
The minimum spend is expressed in the program's currency (euro or local equivalent).
Setting the minimum spend to 0 disables the constraint entirely -- the promotion is available regardless of the transaction amount.
When to use it
Minimum spend is useful when the promotional benefit is significant enough that applying it to very small purchases would be disproportionate or economically unsustainable.
For example, an Extra Fixed Reward of €5 applied to a €2 purchase would result in a net loss on that transaction. Setting a minimum spend of €15 or €20 ensures the promotion is only activated on transactions where the base margin is sufficient to absorb the extra benefit.
It is also a common technique for nudging customers toward a slightly higher basket value -- if the threshold is communicated clearly, participants may consciously add an item to reach it.
If you configure a minimum spend, make sure the threshold is visible in the promotion description. Participants who see a promotion in the list but cannot apply it because they have not yet reached the minimum are more likely to increase their purchase than to abandon the transaction.
