Stored Value

In development

The Stored Value program type is currently in development. Core functionality is available; some features described below are on the roadmap and not yet released.

A Stored Value program lets you issue gift cards — reloadable or single-use — that members can use as a payment instrument in your store or across your merchant network. This is Spraed's private payment program.

How it works

You issue a gift card to a member, loaded with a defined monetary value. The member uses the card to pay for purchases, and the balance is deducted at each transaction. If the card is reloadable, the member or the business can add value to it at any time.

Unlike cashback or points, Stored Value is a direct payment instrument. The member is spending pre-loaded money, not earning and redeeming rewards. This makes it particularly effective for gifting, prepaid budgets, and controlled spending programs.

Single Brand vs Coalition

Single Brand: the gift card is accepted at all your locations. Balance management is straightforward — it is a liability of your brand against the cardholder.

Coalition: gift cards are accepted across all participating merchants in the network. This introduces the same settlement dynamics as a cashback coalition — the Business manages the float and reconciles with merchants after each redemption.

Identity verification (KYC)

For Stored Value programs, particularly in a coalition context, Spraed recommends a KYC (Know Your Customer) verification flow to validate the identity of cardholders before issuing cards with significant value. Spraed provides foundational KYC capabilities; a full dedicated KYC flow is on the roadmap.

Card types

TypeDescription
Single-useFixed value, not reloadable. Typically used as a gift or promotional instrument.
ReloadableCan be topped up by the member or the business. Functions as a recurring prepaid payment method.

Configuring a Stored Value program

When setting up a Stored Value program you define:

  • Card type — single-use or reloadable
  • Initial value — the amount loaded at issuance
  • Accepted locations — all locations or a defined subset
  • Reload rules — who can reload the card and by how much (reloadable cards only)
  • Expiry — whether the card value expires after a period of inactivity
